Jennifer McIntosh

Jennifer McIntosh is an accredited mediator with the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) in London and Conflict Dynamics in South Africa.  She is also recognised as a qualified mediator by the International Mediation Institute (IMI) in Amsterdam.

She holds Bachelor of Arts, B.A.(Hons) and Bachelor of Laws degrees from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, as well as a Diploma in Maritime Law.  She is an admitted attorney and notary public of the High Court of South Africa.

Jennifer was in private practice for 25 years from 1987, the first 15 of which were spent as a maritime lawyer.  She then transitioned to a more transactional role for the next 10 years, specialising in ports, energy and international trade.  During her time in private practice, she was an invited speaker at a number of international conferences, served on various industry committees, and contributed to several publications.

In 2012, she made a move in-house to the South African subsidiary of a UK FTSE 100 company having substantial agricultural, manufacturing and power-generation operations in six sub-Saharan African countries.  This necessitated broadening her areas of practice to include competition matters, corporate affairs, construction contracts, mergers and acquisitions, green and brownfield projects, land affairs, procurement tenders, shareholder disputes, tax matters and general litigation. She ended her legal career there towards the end of 2020 in the role of Group General Counsel & Company Secretary.

Current memberships include the International Bar Association, the Maritime Law Association of South Africa and the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.  She is also a member of the South African Sugar Industry Appeals Tribunal.

With her broad range of experience and training, Jennifer is well placed to mediate commercial disputes.  Her style is generally facilitative and, where appropriate, transformative, with a view to assisting the parties in working towards a mutually acceptable, practical resolution of their dispute.
